Save Rich, fudgy chocolate brownies marbled with creamy matcha cheesecake for an elegant twist on a classic dessert.
I first brought these matcha cheesecake swirl brownies to a weekend family gathering, and everyone was excited by the striking green swirls and unique flavor combination. The batch disappeared even before dinner was served.
Ingredients
- Brownie Batter: 115 g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, 200 g (1 cup) semisweet chocolate chips, 150 g (3/4 cup) granulated sugar, 2 large eggs, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 80 g (2/3 cup) all-purpose flour, 1/4 tsp salt
- Matcha Cheesecake Swirl: 225 g (8 oz) cream cheese (softened), 50 g (1/4 cup) granulated sugar, 1 large egg, 1 tbsp all-purpose flour, 1 tbsp matcha green tea powder, 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions

- Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). Line a 20x20 cm (8x8-inch) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
- Melt Butter & Chocolate:
- In a heatproof bowl, melt the butter and chocolate chips together (in microwave 30-second intervals or using bain-marie). Stir until smooth. Let cool slightly.
- Mix Wet Ingredients:
- Whisk in sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract into the melted chocolate mixture until combined.
- Add Dry Ingredients:
- Fold in flour and salt until just incorporated. Set aside.
- Make Cheesecake Mixture:
- In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth and creamy.
- Add Remaining Cheesecake Ingredients:
- Add egg, flour, matcha powder, and vanilla extract to cream cheese mixture. Beat until fully combined and smooth.
- Layer Batter:
- Pour about two-thirds of brownie batter into prepared pan and spread evenly.
- Add Cheesecake Swirl:
- Dollop matcha cheesecake mixture over brownie layer, add remaining brownie batter in between.
- Swirl & Bake:
- Use skewer or knife to gently swirl mixtures to create a marbled effect. Bake for 35 minutes, until edges are set and center is slightly jiggly.
- Cool & Slice:
- Cool completely in pan, lift out and slice into squares.

Cooking Questions
- → How do I achieve a distinct swirl pattern?
Use a skewer or knife to gently swirl the cheesecake and brownie mixtures together after dolloping them in the pan. Avoid overmixing for best marbled effect.
- → Can I increase the matcha flavor?
Yes. Add up to 1.5 tablespoons of matcha powder to enhance the tea's earthy taste and bright green color.
- → What is the ideal texture after baking?
The edges should be set while the center remains slightly jiggly. Cooling fully allows the bars to firm up for perfect slicing and serving.
- → How should leftovers be stored?
Place squares in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to four days. Serve cold or bring to room temperature before enjoying.
- → Can I add white chocolate chips to the brownies?
Absolutely. Stir in white chocolate chips to the brownie batter for added sweetness and richness before baking.
- → Are there gluten-free alternatives?
Swap all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend to make the squares suitable for gluten-sensitive guests. Confirm all ingredients are labeled gluten-free.
